We all know that hygiene is important. Especially if you’re out in public or on a date with your significant other. We have things such as deodorant, lotion, body wash, and shampoo to keep ourselves clean but what about our beards. This blog post is designed to give men a deeper understand on the process of keeping your beards clean via shampoo. I have five tips below that will help you better understand the how to properly maintain and clean your beard.

Tip 1- Regular Hair shampoo can strip natural oils away from your face and beard.

Don’t get this wrong, I’m not against using shampoo on your hair. However, a head shampoo isn’t the best option for your beard. It’s best to use a shampoo that’s designed specifically for your beard a.k.a “Beard Wash.” Facial hair tends to be thicker and often times has a more wiry texture compared to the hair on your head. Many hair shampoos have chemicals that strip away the natural oils from you hair and face. The problem with this is that the natural oils help with your skin and the overall health of your beard. If your beard and the skin under your beard is stripped of oils and nutrients, it will become much harder to maintain a quality beard.

Tip 2-Too much shampooing is bad

When it comes to your beard, it’s recommended that you wash only 2-3 times a week.  Washing your beard to much prevents the beard from having adequate time to absorb the healthy oils your body generates as well as the other products you use on it (beard oil, beard balm, etc).  Keep in minds that 2-3 time a week is good for a bearded man that works a standard blue collar job. However, if you work in an environment where you are exposed to a lot if germs, dirt, or allergens (landscaping, construction, etc), you may want to wash you beard more often.

Tip 3- Instead of shampooing, just rinse and condition

I know that telling a person to wash their beard 2-3 times a week can sound strange. Especially, if you are used to washing it on a regular basis. One way to avoid going to bed feeling like your beard is icky is to simply rinse it in lukewarm water and add a beard conditioner to it. I add a conditioner to my beard every night when I shower. Soaking your beard under the shower head rinses off some of the heavy dirt that you may have accumulated throughout the day and using a conditioner will give you beard the important oils it needs and it will make your beard easier to manage and groom afterwards. After you apply your beard conditioner, let it sit in your beard for a few minutes then rinse it out. Your beard will thank you later.

Tip 4- Stay away from sulfates, dyes, parabens and formaldehyde

There are some excellent products in the hair care market but just because they provide the desired results for you hair doesn’t mean that they are actually good for you. Many hair products (including some beard washes) many include harmful ingredients. Check out to list below to see which ingredients you should avoid:

  • Sulphates- a chemical in shampoos that often create a lathering effect. These chemicals may be carcinogenic and possibility cause certain types of cancer.
  • Dyes- some of the chemical used in dyes can cause allergic reactions and increase your chances of getting cancer. Some dyes may even cause you hair to become damaged and fall out.
  • Parabens- Parabens are typically found in skincare products. However, some hair products do still contain parabens. The purpose of parabens are to promote hair growth and prevent bacteria. Previous research has linked parabens to cancer so it’s better to avoided parabens in your products.
  • Formaldehyde- This particular chemical can be found in some of the preservatives that companies use in their shampoo formulations. Formaldehyde is known to cause damage to DNA and various forms of cancer. It’s dangerous when inhaled and can be adsorbed through the skin when it’s in a liquid format.

Tip 5-Condition your beard right after you use your beard wash

After you wash your beard, make sure you use a beard conditioner. The two products are designed to work together. The beard wash cleanses your beard while the conditioner distributes nutrients, protein, and healthy oils to your hair to promote growth and improve the overall health of your facial hair. Simply washing is helpful but why not get the extra boost of hair health from an awesome beard conditioner.
